Embellished border saree in midnight navy

How to Choose the Right Saree for Every Occasion

A saree is the most versatile outfit in an Indian wardrobe — the same six yards can look relaxed at the office or grand at a wedding. The secret is matching the fabric, work and colour to the occasion. Here is a quick guide.

1. Everyday & office wear: light printed georgette

Printed georgette sarees are light, drape easily and don't crush much — perfect for long workdays and travel. Pick soft prints and calm shades like peach, purple or white & blue. Pair with a simple blouse, small studs and flats.

2. Festivals & pujas: bandhani, leheriya and patola prints

Traditional prints bring instant festive energy. Red bandhani and multicolour leheriya are classics for Teej, Navratri and family functions. Add a pair of jhumkas and bangles and you are ready.

3. Weddings & evening functions: embellished borders

An embellished or embroidered border catches the light beautifully in the evening. Deep shades — midnight navy, jet black, crimson red, emerald green or royal purple — look rich and photograph well. Keep jewellery statement-but-simple so the border stays the hero.

4. Formal events: chanderi

Chanderi has a soft sheen and crisp fall that looks polished without being heavy. A striped chanderi saree is ideal for formal lunches, office celebrations and day events.

Quick draping tips

  • Wear the petticoat and footwear before you drape, so the length is right.
  • Pin the pleats at the waist and the pallu at the shoulder for a neat, secure look.
  • Georgette falls best with 5–7 pleats; slightly heavier fabrics need fewer.
  • Most of our sarees are about 5.5 m with a 0.8 m unstitched blouse piece — get the blouse stitched to your measurements for the best fit.

Caring for your saree

Dry clean for the first wash, then gently hand wash in cold water, dry in shade and iron on low on the reverse side. Store folded in a cotton bag and refold now and then to avoid permanent creases.
